Mazda has been transforming itself into an affordable–and I mean affordable–sports luxury brand, and one of its biggest successes in that effort is the

2021 Mazda CX-30 turbo.

Easily the sexiest of the compact SUVs now available on the market, the CX-30 Turbo backs up those good looks with sparkling acceleration and handling that will put big smiles on your face.

It’s not easy to design an SUV of any size that doesn’t look like a box on wheels, but Mazda’s …

I took one look at the new 2021 Hyundai Elantra, and my mouth dropped.

That is an Elantra?   You’re kidding me!

The coolest, sleekest, and futuristic compact car is….an Elantra?

Yes, indeed.   The 2021 Hyundai Elantra keeps all of the terrific attributes it has always had–economy, decent interior room, practicality, and value–but it adds the cherry on top:  Fantastic looks that will turn your head in a minute. And that is not a bad thing at a time in the automotive …

Driving the 2021 Lexus ES 250 AWD was like a casual lunch with an old friend for me.

The familiarity is there.  The memories of time spent together suddenly spring to your mind–and you smile.

But you notice some changes since your last time together–and in the case of the 2021 Lexus ES, well—that’s a good thing.

As a car writer who’s become pretty familiar over the years with Lexus, it’s clear that it has transformed itself into quite the stylish, contemporary brand, …

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 T SE R-Line

By  Don Hammonds

Now that we are closing in on the new models,  we thought it might be fun to remember some of the products we have enjoyed over the last year or so.

The first thing that came to mind was Volkswagen’s 2020 Tiguan 2.0 SE R-Line.

At the time, VW’s new looks were–and still are–bringing customers into the showroom–no small feat these days.

I remember my teenager and his friend jumping for joy when the Tiguan …

2021 Ford F-150 4×4 Supercrew (with a 157 inch wheelbase!)

Price as tested: $55,295

Power for our demonstrator came from a  400 horsepower 5.0 liter V-8, backed by Ford’s new 10 speed automatic transmission. It’s a good, smooth one most of the time, though there were times when it seemed to hesitate to shift into gear.

Man, does this thing MOVE when you hit the pedal!

Smooth, relatively quiet and steady on the road,   I have nothing but praise for the F-150’s …

I admit that I’m a great admirer of Volkswagens.

Anytime I was given one to drive, I’ve always immediately fell in love with them for their snappy, crisp handling, and strong acceleration.  They simply treats to pilot anywhere–and especially on highways.

But the Atlas, the company’s mid-sized SUV, is something else again.

It’s big, almost massive in how it presents itself.  It has tons of room inside and given its cargo space, rugged looks, and crisp handling, it’s …

Want to see a car company that’s “doing it right”?

Take a look at Mazda.

Mazda has always been a company that knows precisely what they are.  No gimmicks.  No chasing after what every other car maker is building.

Just a company with remarkable clarity about its identity and how they want to express us.

And what is amazing –at least to me–is that they do it quietly and a sense of assurance. They don’t need splashy this and showy that.  They …

It’s hard to stand out in a crowded SUV market.

So many products look the same, offer the same equipment, and provide pretty much the same benefits–and issues.

But Toyota has clearly set itself apart with the Highlander.

On top of all the terrific perks that you get with any Toyota–dependability, impeccable quality, longevity, high resale value–Toyota has bestowed a completely new look on the Highlander, which instantly helps distinguish this much-loved brand against its competitors.

Though …

Wow. Who knew?

The Genesis brand, Hyundai’s classy luxury lineup, which has only been around for a couple of years as a separate entity,  is serving notice on the stalwarts of the luxury market and basically telling them all, “Move the heck over–there’s a new sheriff in town and he’s got game!”

A newcomer to the midsized luxury sport field is giving the 3, (BMW 3 Series), the C (Mercedes C series) and the fours (Audi A4), a a real …
