2018 Dodge Durango SRT 392: Smile when you call on it

By Don Hammonds Something unforgettable comes this way. You can hear it. You can see it.  You can feel it. It's Dodge's 2018 Durango SRT 392, a muscled full throated performance SUV that will make your socks roll up and down, raise hairs on the back of your neck and echo thunderously in your ears. Of course, Durango's been around a  minute---a bunch of minutes-- since 2011, I think. While it hasn't changed much over the years, sales figures and positive media reviews suggerst to me at leat, that this baby has a bunch of good years left.  No need to change. Beside, Chrysler has made certain to keep it updated with the latest technology, and that, along with new versions to tease the public, have resulted in brisk sales and happy customers. For 2018, the big news is our test car--the 2018 Durango SRT 392. It puts out  475 horsepower, accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.4  hair-raising seconds, and can tow up to 8,600 pounds. That's a whole lot of towing prowess--and that too, works in the favor of the Durango SRT 392, along with its overall roaring, snorting image, and its spacious interior that seats plenty of folk. Then there's the fuel economy issue.  You need to think long and hard about this before buying. The Durango has a combined fuel economy rating of 15, 13 miles per gallon in city driving, and 19 on the highway.  It uses 6.7 gallon to drive 100 miles, and you will spend a whopping $8,000more on gasoline costs over five years, compared to he average vehicle. And it costs $5.12 to drive 25 miles.  It costs $76 to fill up the 24.6 gallon tank. So what do you get with the 2018 Durango SRT 392? You get that 6.4-liter V8 engine (475 hp, 470 lb-ft), performance-tuned steering, an adaptive suspension, electronically controlled limited-slip differential, SRT Performance Pages (various configurable performance parameters), and a driver's session at the SRT Track Experience driving school. If you want to add more stuff to your Durango SRT 392 order, consider a sunroof, upgraded Laguna leather upholstery, the rear entertainment system, the SRT Interior Appearance Group (includes carbon-fiber accents and soft-touch headliner) and the Technology Group. Of course, not everybody's ready for this big boy.  Don't fret--there are other versions of the Durango that area available.  They include: First, know that you can get all wheel drive at optional cost, while the SRT only comes in all-wheel drive. For Durango, seven-passenger seating is standard, while second-row captain's chairs (reducing capacity to six) are optional. If you need to prioritize cargo over passengers, you can order the base SXT with just two rows of seats. The other trims are three-row only. Standard equipment on the SXT includes a 3.6-liter, 293 horsepower V6 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Other standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a load-leveling rear suspension, heated mirrors, a rearview camera, keyless ignition and entry, three-zone climate control, a 60/40-split folding and reclining second-row seat, a 50/50-split folding third-row seat with power-folding headrests (or alternatively, an option to delete the third-row seat) and cloth upholstery. Technology features include Bluetooth phone connectivity, a 7-inch touchscreen interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, dual USB ports and a six-speaker sound system. Step up to the GT and the standard stuff also includes 20-inch wheels, a power liftgate, rear parking sensors, remote start, heated front and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats, leather and suede upholstery, a 115-volt power outlet, driver-position memory settings and satellite radio. Choose the Citadel, and standard equipment includes  xenon headlights, automatic high beams, automatic wipers, upgraded brakes, front parking sensors, roof-rail crossbars, a sunroof, a cargo cover, upgraded leather upholstery, additional leather trim, a power-adjustable steering column, the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen interface, a navigation system, a power-adjustable passenger seat, ventilated front seats, and a nine-speaker audio system with a subwoofer and HD radio. An optional Anodized Platinum appearance package adds upgraded leather upholstery with silver accent stitching and special interior trim. The   high performance R/T gets the 5.7-liter V8 engine (360 hp) as standard, an upgraded steering system, a sport-tuned suspension, a performance hood design, LED foglights, red accent stitching and a Beats audio system. The Citadel's standard roof rails and sunroof are optional. The 5.7-liter V8 is also optional for the Citadel. So what is it like to drive this beast? Exhilarating! It accelerates instantly and vociferously, and a tap can lay down some stripes on the pavement if you are not discreet about the way you hit that pedal. Yes, it does ride rugged, though we suspect some might use a different word--rough. You feel the bounces and the hits from the potholes and road buckles, so be warned. But on the other hand, if you're driving this thing, I don't think the hard ride is going to be foremost in your mind, right? The fun is very audible too.  Those big exhaust pipes let all far and near that this is a SUV you will have to reckon with.  It's all about the image--and the business that goes along with it.
