Editor's Note: For the next few weeks, we will publish a 2017 Buyers Guide for as many brands as we can find information to publish.  We are starting with Ford, and tomorrow's buyers guide will feature Nissan. By Don Hammonds For Ford, 2017 looks like a year of red hot performance cars and doing whatever it takes to keep their Number 1 in sales record intact. Here's a look at what is ahead for some of Ford's most popular products: Mustang: Enthusiast customers will continue to enjoy the original pony car’s range of powerful engines. The standard 3.7-liter V6 offers up 300 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, while the available 2.3-liter EcoBoost® puts out 310 horsepower* and 320 lb.-ft. of torque*. Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V8 engine kicks out 435 horsepower* and 400 lb.-ft. of torque*. All Mustang models come with a dual exhaust system. [caption id="attachment_8736" align="alignnone" width="612"] 2017 Ford Mustang[/caption] The 2017 Mustang chassis features an integral link independent rear suspension that helps minimize body roll and isolate road imperfections for a responsive ride and precise handling. The popular Pony Package includes 19-inch polished aluminum wheels, unique upper grille with classic tri-bar pony logo and side stripes. The available Performance Package includes a 3.55 limited-slip differential, increased-diameter antiroll bars, larger brake rotors, heavy-duty springs and unique chassis tuning. Mustang features available SYNC® 3 enhanced voice recognition communications and entertainment system. An available 8-inch LCD capacitive touch screen in the center stack has swipe and pinch-to-zoom capabilities, AppLink, 911 Assist®, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers can now opt for three new colors including Lightning Blue, Grabber Blue and White Platinum Metallic Tri-coat. Technical specifications for the 2017 Ford Mustang can be found here.   2017 Fusion Sport Ford is hitting the high performance end of the intermediate sedan class hard---and early considering that there are only two other family sedans that even have performance models--Dodge Charger and Toyota Camry. So that is the raison d'etre for the all-new  2017 Ford Fusion V6 Sport is a performance sedan.  And Ford is right--it is a rare product in this segment.  It comes with  a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost® V6 delivering 325 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque when using 93-octane fuel. The engine is mated to a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Power like this vanquishes on-ramp anxiety, and the confidence of all-wheel drive means sure-footed performance in challenging conditions. Antiroll bars, spring rates and wider tires are tuned for a sporty ride, and are complemented by continuously controlled damping for real-time suspension tuning – from stiff to soft depending on setup and road input. The system also allows for pothole detection, where sensors detect the edge of a pothole and, within milliseconds, change damping rates to reduce the severity of an impact. Fusion has always been a styling standout, and Fusion V6 Sport takes the look in a new direction, with an aggressive front end with deeper air intakes, gloss black mesh grille, 19-inch tarnished dark wheels, a rear spoiler and quad exhaust outlets. Accommodations inside take the same bold approach, including leather-trimmed seating and grippy, Miko sueded seat inserts, black headliner, carbon fiber appearance trim, and a modification to the rotary shifter – the letter L for low range changes to S for sport mode. Pushing the sport mode button sets the car up for maximum performance – steering wheel paddle shifters are fully enabled to control the transmission, shift points are aggressively programmed, throttle response is faster, steering stiffens, continuously controlled damping enters a more aggressive profile, and active noise control is tuned for a much more entertaining in-cabin engine note. The rest of the 2017 Fusion lineup The 2017 Ford Fusion brings significant updates including new front styling with signature lighting and available LED headlights with new grille options, as well as a freshly redesigned rear end. A new high-end Platinum model provides a premium experience for Fusion buyers. [caption id="attachment_8737" align="alignnone" width="567"] 2017 Ford Fusion profile[/caption] Technology has always played a key role with this car, and the 2017 model is no different. A new rotary gear shift dial is standard across the Fusion range, offering a high-tech and functional experience combined with a low-profile design for a spacious-feeling cabin. The new rotary dial allows for easier access to new storage bins, illuminated USB charge port and ergonomically designed cupholders. Available SYNC® 3 includes Siri EyesFree® capability to help Fusion drivers connect and control their iPhone on the road. SYNC Connect is available to enable owners to remotely start their car, schedule future starts, or lock and unlock the car using a smartphone. This system helps drivers find a perpendicular parking spot, calculate the path, and steer the car to properly position it within the space, with the driver controlling throttle, brake and gear shifter. Optional Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert includes sensors in the car’s rear quarter-panels that can detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic – unseen by the driver – is detected. BLIS® enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when slowly backing out of a parking space with obstructed views. In combination with a standard rearview camera, BLIS helps make for confident maneuvering in parking lots. A variety of engines are available including the 2.5-liter i-VCT I-4. Also available are a 2.0-liter EcoBoost® I-4 and a 1.5-liter EcoBoost I-4; these include Auto Start-Stop as standard equipment (technology available only with EcoBoost). Escape now features more of what customers said they really wanted – the latest driver-assist technologies, connectivity, and two new fun-to-drive, efficient EcoBoost® engines. Escape is one of the best-selling vehicles in its class. In 2015, a record 306,492 Escapes were sold in the United States – making it Ford’s No. 2 nameplate behind F-Series, the country’s best-selling vehicle line for 34 straight years. [caption id="attachment_8738" align="alignnone" width="576"] New Ford Escape packs more of what Escape customers said they wanted, including the latest driver-assist technologies, remote connectivity and two new fun-to-drive EcoBoost® engines.[/caption] The new Escape features available SYNC® Connect mobile access, which allows owners to use the FordPass® smartphone platform to start, lock, unlock and locate their vehicle. It features driver-assist technologies such as adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, a lane-keeping system and enhanced active park assist – all packed in a vehicle that’s been redesigned from the inside out. Escape is the first Ford vehicle to make Auto Start-Stop technology standard with either of the two EcoBoost offerings – a 1.5-liter engine and a 2.0-liter twin-scroll. Auto Start-Stop shuts off the engine during common stops, so the vehicle burns no gas and emits zero tailpipe emissions, restarting automatically when the brake pedal is released. Changes to the interior begin with a new push-button electronic parking brake that replaces the large hand-actuated parking brake, dramatically enhancing the front-row experience for customers. The gear shifter has been repositioned rearward for improved access to climate controls on the center stack. A media bin added at the bottom of the stack offers access to a USB port and covered power outlet. The redesign also brings improved cupholders, two new storage bins and a larger center armrest. An all-new steering wheel includes easy-to-work buttons for audio and climate controls, and a new swing-bin glove box provides easier access to stored items. Exterior design changes give the new Escape a more confident, rugged persona. The redesigned hood and raised trapezoidal grille evoke a more prominent feel. Ford Escape has long been a leader in offering advanced driver-assist technologies, and the 2017 model continues that. In addition to such favorite features as hands-free liftgate and SYNC 3, the new Escape offers these available technologies:
  • Adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support uses sensors to detect a slow-moving vehicle in front and adjust cruise control accordingly
