By Don Hammonds Let's say you are looking for a family car. You want something that's nice looking, with all the features you need, and good gas mileage, too.  But you DONT want anything boring, slow, or dowdy looking. We've got your car right here----the 2015 Nissan Altima.   Even with a four cylinder economical engine, the Altima is anything but slow. It drives much lighter than it is in reality, with a smooth, quiet ride. And even the cheapest Altima in the lineup looks as though it costs a heck of a lot more money than it does.     "Now in the third model year of the fifth-generation design, Nissan Altima continues as one of the nation's top-selling vehicles – embraced by owners for its premium exterior and interior designs, rewarding driving experience and innovative, driver-focused technology. Altima also offers efficient 38 miles-per-gallon highway fuel economy (2.5-liter engine) and an array of seven high-value available models that meet a range of customer needs and budgets," a Nissan news release said. For 2015, the major enhancements include:
  • Altima 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL grades add NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps, Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Moving Object Detection (MOD) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) as standard equipment
  • All 3.5-liter V6 Altimas also feature a 1-mpg increase for highway and combined fuel economy ratings – now 22/32/26 mpg city/highway/combined; the improvement is a result of reduced internal friction (including DLC piston rings and sodium-filled valves), improved air intake resistance, the addition of exhaust variable camshaft timing (VTC), enhanced D-Step Shift logic and reduced internal friction for the standard Xtronic transmission
  • Beige interior equipped models receive black carpeting and lower seat side trim
  • 8-way power driver's seat and 2-way power lumbar support are added to 2.5 SV and 3.5 SV models
  • 4-way power front passenger's seat is added to SL trim level
  • Standard fog lights are added to 2.5 SV
  • Intelligent Climate Control is added to models equipped with Remote Engine Start System (SV, SL)
  • Offered in seven models: Altima 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL with 182-horsepower (179 hp CAL) 2.5-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine and 3.5 S, 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL with 270-horsepower 3.5-liter V6
  • Advanced Xtronic transmission standard on all models
Our 2015 Altima 2.5 SV arrived with a base price of $24,720.  Add a convenience package and destination charges, and the total price is $26,880.          Power came from the 2.5 liter 182 horsepower four cylinder engine, backed by Nissan's trusty CVT automatic transmission. Fuel mileage with this engine is 31 overall and 27 city and 38 highway.  You will save about $2,500 over five years in fuel costs if you buy an Altima with the four cylinder engine.  It uses 3.2 gallons of gasoline per 100 miles, and it has an annual fuel cost of $1,700 based on 15,000 miles of driving and using gasoline  costs $3.50 per gallon. The Altima has an air of luxury and graciousness inside, aided by sumptuous leather, an attractive two toned theme with tasteful wood accents and chrome accoutrements everywhere.  In other words, this is an elegant, attention getting automobile.       It certainly is among the most roomy cars in its class, with plenty of stretch out space for legs, and comfortable, very well-positioned headrests for the back seat passengers.  It's a lovely place to take a nap as your driver heads down the highway! The instrument panel, by the way, is one of the most tasteful around, with easy to use controls, a generally intuitive function for all systems, and a navigation and BlueTooth set up that is almost impossibly simple to use.  Every action leads to another logical action, with no guesswork involved here. Really, there was nothing to complain about--the Altima does what it is asked to do, and does so dependably and comfortably. Nothing was askew, out of place or difficult to use.  It's all there.       We can't imagine that you could not find at least one or two Altimas in the lineup that would meet your needs--and do so with grace, performance and fuel economy.       A not to be missed car for anyone looking for a new family sedan.
