Even though it’s a coupe, it has plenty of room and a decent trunk. But it’s the power that is the S5’s forte. Enjoy. When I realized that an upcoming week of Interstate commuting would be done in an Audi S5 coupe, I was a bit nervous. Powerful sporty coupes are not great turnpike cruisers. Boy, was I surprised. In fact, the Audi AS5 is a wonderful car no matter what the highway, long and straight or short and twisty. For example, the 4.2-liter V8 under the hood has great power. Rarely have I been in a car that inspired such confidence that I could just tromp on the gas pedal and GO. Under the hood are 354 horses that reach all four wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual mode. But power isn’t the only forte of the S5. It has handling to match the power and the brakes to stop the S5 if you ever want to (well, you do have to reach your destination some time). Handling is also excellent. Well, you’d expect it on the Interstate, but there were also times when I took the S5 on some less-than-Interstate style roads and it was fun and games all the way. The suspension isn’t too harsh or firm, but comfortable enough to take you through any road. The suspension can be set for comfort, automatic or dynamic. We lef tit in automatic. The 6-speed automatic has a manual mode with shifters behind the steering wheel. To downshift, pull the left lever; to upshift, pull the right. 2010 audi s5 The instrument panel is interesting and informative. From the left, there’s a small water gauge, large tachometer, information center, large 200 mph speedometer and small fuel gauge. The info center reads out, from the top, the radio station you’re listening to, digital speedometer because the analog speedo is useless in lower ranges, miles per gallon or miles to empty, odometer, gear you’re in, outside temperature. There’s an excellent audio system. There are thumbwheels for the station change and volume. Audi’s multi-media controller knob is located in the center console right where your hand falls. The MMI controls the audio and navigation systems. It is sometimes confusing, but when you spend some time with it you can learn to work it because it is intuitive. Creature comforts include a pair of cupholders between the seats with a small cell phone cubby next to them. There are also bottle holders in the doors. There’s also a large sun roof, but it just tilts, it doesn’t open all the way. 2010 audi s5 As with all coupes, the rear seats are tight, but the backs fold down to increase luggage space. The front seats offer excellent side support, which is good for those winding roads. They’re also very comfortable on long rides. As is Audi’s passion lately, the daytime running lights are while LEDs in an interesting pattern. The same with the tail lights. Audi designers must have fun designing these.
