2009-Mercedes-SL-Roadster “Wow.” That’s what I heard when I stepped out of the 2009 Mercedes SL 550 Roadster.   I had stopped at a convenient store to pick up a few items, and was drawing a few jealous stares.   As I stepped out of the hard-top convertible (Capri-Blue with Stone Napa Leather Interior) I noticed quite a few people admiring the car.  It was easy to understand the covetous bystanders; this is a beautiful vehicle.  From the moment you lay your eyes on it, it draws you in.  The front end is aggressively, yet beautifully designed with an oversize Mercedes emblem on the front.   The hood is long and sweeping with two arrow-shaped fins that blend well with the rest of the body.  Out particular model was equipped with the optional 19” AMG 5-Spoke wheels adding to the allure. The inside of the car has easy to read instrumentation and is user friendly.  Etc, etc, etc……… This is a fast car.  Producing 382 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM, expect to be stuck to the back of your seat if you decide to put it to the test.  The power generated by the robust 32 Valve 8-cylinder engine will have you exceeding the speed limit in mere seconds.   The power plant has an impressive 391 lb-ft or torque @ 2,800 to 4,800 RPM which adds to the sturdy and muscular feel when driving .  Mercedes claims a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds.  Estimated fuel economy is 14 city 21 highway. At highway speeds (or faster) the car rides smoothly and comfortably.   If you prefer twisty roads, you’re covered there as well.  Although the car is classified as an automatic, you can take charge with the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, or by using the console stick to manually choose a gear.   The car loves taking corners fast, and is equipped with the Electronic Stability Program with Automatic Slip Reduction.  If you need to stop abruptly, the Electrohydraulic Braking System with Brake Assist can have you at a stand- still no time.
