“The Complete Book, of Dodge and Plymouth Muscle”, Mike Mueller, $40.00
Here’s another “must have” book for car enthusiasts, especially thouse of the Mopar variety.
This book may have some material that is familiar to you, but the breezy, witty writing style of Mr. Mueller makes it a joy to read or to hear about again. There seems to be a lot more background knowledge, though, with Mr. Mueller’s book, including inside looks at the developments of these cars, and some of the conflicts and disagreements which had to be worked out before they went into production.
The one thing that takes some getting used to in the book, however, is the arrangement of the materials. You go from reading “Muscular Mopars, 1960-1967,” to “Plymouth Barracuda, 1964 to 1974,” to “Dodge Charger, 1966-1971,” and so forth, moving back and forth between time periods because the stories are broken down by model, not make or year. That may be a bit disconcerting for those used to chronological presentations where you go from year to year. Still, Mr. Mueller’s writing style is so fun that you find yourself breezing through this book in no time.
Point of interest: The front cover has an unusual spinning wheel format included which allows you to see which the Dodge and Plymouth versions of each of these famous muscle cars. It helps for understanding which models were paired off in the corporate hierarchy.
A truly fun read.
