2016 Lexus RX 350: Style leader and then some

By Don Hammonds

Few auto companies can claim a dramatic, across the board styling transformation as Lexus can these days.

No matter where you look, Lexus products are generally at the head of the pack when it comes to contemporary styling with a flair in the luxury business right now.  And that’s a far cry from the days of modestly styled, “good” cars that were pretty much  subdued.

No more. With the striking spindle style grille, the use of what I would call …

2017 Chrysler Pacifica Limited:One of the best new cars on the market

By Don Hammonds

We will get right to the point and declare that there is now a new gold standard for minivans: Chrysler’s all-new Pacifica.

Thanks to some creative thinking, a styling design that is second to none, a walth of impeccable workmanship- and controls that are all intuitive, the Pacifica amply shows what happens with teamwork, a blank piece of paper, and a super keen awareness of how the minivan market has changed in the almost three decades since Chrysler founded the …

2016 Ford Mustang: Bold, wicked fast and gorgeous to boot

By Don Hammonds

My first Mustang was a little one—as in 1:25th scale, purchased over 50 years ago.

At the very bottom corner of the first ad for Mustang back in 1964, kids were invited to send in money for their own miniature Mustang. or 2016, Ford adds some more flavor, color and interest to Mustang.

Me and my next door neighbor both bought them –his was baby blue and mine was beige. And mine has a place in honor inside one of …

2016 Lincoln MKX: Class, class and more class!

By Don Hammonds

Movie buffs might recall the subtle, slinky sexiness of the late actress, Lauren Bacall.

She was never flashy–just confident, arresting, and altogether the center of attention in whatever movie she acted in. And her call line was something like “If you need me..just whistle… you do remember how to whistle, don’t you?”

Consider Lincoln to be the Lauren Bacall of cars. Never obvious.  Way too confident to call attention to itself. Never gaudy. Always subtle. And impossible to miss.

On a lighter …

2016Volkswagen Golf R: Everything you’ve heard—believe it

By Don Hammonds

So-called pocket rockets are all the rage these days.

Ford Focus RS, Honda Civic Si, Subaru WRX STi, Volkswagen GTI and others mainly designed for overseas markets all have their own loyalists, enthusiasts and advocates.

But we at Automobile Journal had a chance to get behind the wheel of a car that you almost certainly don’t want to put in  your pocket, and as for rocket, well…we strongly suggest you hold on tight. And all those others better run for …

2016 Chrysler 200 Limited: Good car, but …farewell…

By Don Hammonds

One of the saddest bits of news over the last few months has been an announcement of the pending departure of the Chrysler 200 and the Dodge Dart, two really decent products that, at least here in Pittsburgh, have pretty big followings—and sales.

Our understanding from industry sources is that FCA wants to concentrate on minivans like its highly acclaimed Pacific–which we will soon drive–along with crossovers, trucks and SUVS, and thankfully, they are keeping on their terrific Dodge sports …

There is so much to like about the Jeep Renegade.

It’s hard working. It’s cute as hell. It’s well built, and fuel economy is great considering what it offers.

But I’m betting none of those things will be reasons why the Renegade is selling like hotcakes.

Renegade is selling well because it has so much personality.  It literally oozes charm and fun through every badge, and interior and exterior feature that it has.  And believe me, really creative nd imaginable design …

2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE: Masterful, Miserly Money Saver

By Don Hammonds

Perhaps I can sum up my experiences with the 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE with a little story.

In four days of driving to seminary, the grocery store, a distant shopping mall, and countless stops here and there for countless reasons, my navy blue Camry went just about everywhere in the sprawling, hilly Pittsburgh metropolitan area. And I went to most places several times–often every day.

We are talking probably 150 to 200 miles of traveling in four days.  All …
