2021 Ford F-150 4×4 Supercrew (with a 157 inch wheelbase!)

Price as tested: $55,295

Performance:

Power for our demonstrator came from a  400 horsepower 5.0 liter V-8, backed by Ford’s new 10 speed automatic transmission. It’s a good, smooth one most of the time, though there were times when it seemed to hesitate to shift into gear.

Man, does this thing MOVE when you hit the pedal!

Smooth, relatively quiet and steady on the road,   I have nothing but praise for the F-150’s …

I admit that I’m a great admirer of Volkswagens.

Anytime I was given one to drive, I’ve always immediately fell in love with them for their snappy, crisp handling, and strong acceleration.  They simply treats to pilot anywhere–and especially on highways.

But the Atlas, the company’s mid-sized SUV, is something else again.

It’s big, almost massive in how it presents itself.  It has tons of room inside and given its cargo space, rugged looks, and crisp handling, it’s …

Want to see a car company that’s “doing it right”?

Take a look at Mazda.

Mazda has always been a company that knows precisely what they are.  No gimmicks.  No chasing after what every other car maker is building.

Just a company with remarkable clarity about its identity and how they want to express us.

And what is amazing –at least to me–is that they do it quietly and a sense of assurance. They don’t need splashy this and showy that.  They …

It’s hard to stand out in a crowded SUV market.

So many products look the same, offer the same equipment, and provide pretty much the same benefits–and issues.

But Toyota has clearly set itself apart with the Highlander.

On top of all the terrific perks that you get with any Toyota–dependability, impeccable quality, longevity, high resale value–Toyota has bestowed a completely new look on the Highlander, which instantly helps distinguish this much-loved brand against its competitors.

Though …

Wow. Who knew?

The Genesis brand, Hyundai’s classy luxury lineup, which has only been around for a couple of years as a separate entity,  is serving notice on the stalwarts of the luxury market and basically telling them all, “Move the heck over–there’s a new sheriff in town and he’s got game!”

A newcomer to the midsized luxury sport field is giving the 3, (BMW 3 Series), the C (Mercedes C series) and the fours (Audi A4), a a real …

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD SUV

Seldom have I seen a vehicle that has dramatically changed my entire outlook on things automotive.

I’m talking about my thoughts about SUVs in general, and my thoughts about a car company in particular–Toyota.

I am a self-confessed auto design maven.  I live for good-looking automotive expressions. I loved the vast variety of styling expressions that used to be emblematic of the auto industry, a time which I fear may be gone for good for the …

Remember the days when all the American automakers were worried about the impact of the Japanese brands on their business?

Well, forget that.

Their problems have multiplied.

Take a look at the all-new Hyundai Sonata:

American manufacturers better worry!

They have all but given up the sedan market, and I think that will come back to haunt them.

Both Kia and Hyundai  will clean the clocks of American brands as a whole when the 2021 selling year ends.

And I predict when the final tally on …

I distinctly remember the first time driving a Toyota Prius many years ago.

It looked and felt like it came from some century beyond ours at the time, and it was teeming with all kinds of hardware, gadgets and gauges that fascinated everyone who saw it. But all the while–it was still a Toyota–with all the virtues that come with the brand: Well-built,  quality everywhere, and the sense that you were well taken care of while behind the …

Tired of boring, boxy, uninteresting looking compact SUV’s?

Check out the 2020 Lexus UX 250h.  Inside and out, on the road and parked in front of your house, I promise you–it will be a sight for tired eyes and a bored automotive spirit.

I think that in recent years, both Toyota and its luxury division, Lexus have made a decision to not walk, but run away from tired, “okay” styling and design.

And why shouldn’t they feel that way?  …

If only all SUVs were as distinctive and full of personality as the Ford Edge.

The Edge, which represents the pizzazz side of Ford’s SUV lineup, is  terrific to drive, easy on the eye, truly comfortable and accommodating to passengers, and, especially with the ST-Line version, has a performance personality all its own.  This, ladies and gentlemen, is the SUV for people who cannot stand SUVs, their blandness and awkwardness on the road.
